Firefly Solar helps Paul lock in his power bills before retirement
“The installation, as it was told to us, happened exactly as they told us.”
Paul and his wife want fixed, predictable bills by the time they both retire, and solar is part of the plan. Their system is set to be paid off right as they retire, and it went in on install day exactly as promised.
Planning for retirement with fixed costs
Paul and his wife bought their home 23 years ago, when their oldest was 14 and in junior high and their youngest was six. They stayed put through the school years on purpose. “You can move a child in elementary, move a child in high school, but never move a child in middle school.”
Now they’re planning the next chapter. Paul wants their bills at a fixed rate by the time they’ve both retired, and solar is a big part of that plan: their system is set to be paid off right in time for retirement. It’s the same thinking behind their hybrid car. Move another slice of their income into a fixed cost now, so there’s one less thing to worry about later.
Why did Paul choose Firefly Solar?
Paul liked that Firefly wasn’t pushy. Their solar representative gave direct answers, and Paul never had to chase him for information. When questions came up, they were answered in a timely manner.

What was installation day like?
Firefly gave Paul a window of six to seven hours for the install. By his count, the crew finished in six hours and 59 minutes.
The electrician stood out. Paul calls him very, very efficient, and the cleanest tradesman he has ever seen. He cleaned up after himself, so Paul and his wife weren’t left pulling insulation out of the ceiling afterward.
What’s next for Paul?
Paul and his wife are considering a fully electric car. If they make the switch, they’re thinking about calling Firefly back to see about adding more panels on the garage. If you’re planning the same move, here’s how EV charging works with solar.
In the meantime, Paul sees his solar payments as a means to an end:

“It’s not, ‘Oh, God, we have to pay.’ It’s like, ‘Okay, we only have this many more months to go, then we’ll never have to do it again.’”
Paul shared their own experience. Every home is different: your system, costs, and bill credits depend on your energy use, roof, system size, utility rates, and available incentives.
Video transcriptWhat Paul said on camera, lightly edited for readability.
We bought this property 23 years ago. At the time, our oldest was 14 and in junior high school, and my youngest was six. You can move a child in elementary, move a child in high school, but never move a child in middle school. Just screws them up too much.
Where we are in our lives, we want to be at a fixed rate of bills when we’ve both retired, and having solar energy will give us that, and it will be paid off just right in time for us to retire. So it’s just one more box checked that we don’t have to worry about. We also got a hybrid car for the exact same reason. We want to take another portion of our income and put it into a fixed cost so we don’t have to worry about it later.
Firefly Solar, I love the fact that they were not pushy. I also like the fact that they did answer my questions in a timely manner.
The installation, as it was told to us, happened exactly as they told us. We were given a window of six to seven hours. I think it was six hours and 59 minutes that it took them to put it in. The electrician was not only very, very efficient, but I’ve never seen a tradesman that clean in my life. He cleaned up after himself. We weren’t stuck pulling insulation from the ceiling. Finished in minutes.
The salesman approached us. He was not pushy. He gave direct answers. We didn’t have to chase him around. We are very happy that we did it.
Actually, we’re considering going to a full electric auto, and in that case we are thinking about calling them back and getting more put on our garage if we could.
We see it as a means to an end. It’s not, “Oh, God, we have to pay.” It’s like, “Okay, we only have this many more months to go, then we’ll never have to do it again.”
